Quien se inventaría el formato?

Creo que viene de BSDs, así que pueden ponerlo privativo :-) Antes de los DNSs todo era con /etc/hosts.

Creo que los BSD tenían estipulado en la licencia que se debe mantener la nota de copyright original http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BSD_license .
