Introduction
This page describes some tips that can help you get OpenOffice.org to work.
OpenOffice backport for woody and XFree86 4.3 backport
Maybe you had to use Xfree4.3 because your video card was not supported in XFree4.0 (Woody default). xfree-configuring.
Add the following line to your /etc/apt/sources.list:
deb http://ftp.freenet.de/pub/debian-openoffice/ woody-test main contrib
Use whatever (aptitude, apt-get, ...) to install the "new" version.
Invisible menus in Debian
If your OpenOffice installation doesn't show any text instead of the menus, like the following shot shows, you'll need to backport:
In Debian woody, backport kernel 2.4.26, backport XFree86 4.3 backport , OpenOffice 1.1.1-2 backport woody-test.
Do the following :
Assure you have the dimension of your monitor in your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4, you must set DisplaySize 275 205 or the width and height respectively in Section Monitor. It must be set in millimeters; this was an example for a 14" monitor of 27.5 x 20.5 cm. With the dimension OpenOffice.org seems to be able to calculate the width and height of the font used for the menues, tooltips and the like.
If this doesn't work for you, try looking at /usr/share/doc/openoffice.org/README.Debian.gz.
